Utah victims of violent crimes will be getting a little help from the U.S. government with the transfer of $47,000 in federal funds to Utah's victim compensation program in fiscal year 1990.
The Office for Victims of Crimes, a U.S. Department of Justice agency, provided the grant, which comes from fines and penalties assessed on convicted federal defendants. The federal grant supplements state funds used to pay an ever-increasing number of claims for medical costs, lost wages and support, mental health counseling, funeral expenses and other related costs to innocent victims of violent crimes. In fiscal year 1989, Utah provided about $117,000 in compensation payments to crime victims.
