Zion National Park crews have been busy keeping the park ready for visitors. Some of the rehabilitation projects include the water distribution system and a new "face lift" to Zion Lodge by the concessionaire, TW Recreational Services.
A complete rebuilding of the roof structure and a new facade will restore the building to near its pre-1960s look, park officials said. The lodge burned to the ground in 1966.Another major construction project is the expansion of the visitor center at park headquarters in Zion Canyon. Designed primarily to accommodate the Zion Natural History Association's growth during recent years, it will provide warehouse storage space for the various publications the association sells, as well as provide needed museum storage for park artifacts and National Park Service interpretive staff work areas. The project is being funded by the natural history association.
Visitation for December was 47,532, a 12 percent increase over December 1988. Visitation for 1989 was 2,241,244, which was a 3 percent increase over 1988.
