For as little as $4, Salt Lake County fire officials can give you something that could save your life.
Smoke detectors are being offered at a discount price of $4 plus tax to residents of the unincorporated county as part of a program to help promote Fire Prevention Week."We figure that 80 to 90 percent of the fire deaths would be eliminated if everyone had a smoke detector and tested them (on a regular basis)," said Salt Lake County Fire Lt. Dennis Steadman.
"Those are pretty staggering figures."
County firefighters are passing out coupons for the $4 smoke detectors at two locations of the Home Club, 4637 S. 900 East and 5585 S. Redwood Road. Firefighters will be on hand Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will also answer questions about the proper placement and maintenance of the smoke detectors.
An ordinance will go into effect Jan. 1, making it mandatory that each residence have at least one detector on each floor where sleeping areas exist.
