Clarence Birdseye got the idea for quick freezing foods while fishing in the icy waters of Labrador, Newfoundland. The water was so cold the fish froze as Birdseye pulled them through the ice. He began experimenting with the quick-freeze process and in 1924 founded his frozen food business in Gloucester, Mass.
