Action star Steven Seagal hacked his way to the top of the box-office charts for the second consecutive week as his martial-arts drama "Marked for Death" collected $7.4 million.
According to figures released by Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc., the World War II aviation drama "Memphis Belle" flew into the second place with a national take of $5 million in its premiere engagement. "Ghost," the thriller-love story, was third on a gross of $4.2 million."Ghost" is the second-biggest moneymaker of the year with $167.4 million, behind "Pretty Woman," which has made $176.3 million.
In fourth was the re-release of the animated classic "Fantasia." It made $4 million. "Mr. Destiny," a new comedy starring Jim Belushi as an unhappy Little League veteran, opened in seventh with $3 million on a limited release of 727 screens.
"Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael," a new drama starring Winona Ryder as a waifish teen in a small town, did poorly in its debut weekend. It grossed $1.8 million on 635 screens. In 10th was the "Henry & June," the first movie to get the new NC-17 rating, which made $1.4 million on 189 screens.
Playing in limited release, writer-director Barry Levinson's autobiographical "Avalon" collected $201,574, for a spectacular per-screen average of $28,796 on seven screens. The film spread nationwide on Friday.
