The proposed adoption of a major street plan for Provo leads the agenda for the City Council meeting Tuesday.

The plan is the first major update since the adoption of a general street plan in 1977. Since that time, traffic patterns have changed as Provo developed. The new plan also attempts to take into account future development.A major street plan identifies arterial and collector streets. Al Mickelsen of traffic planning said 80 percent of the automobiles travel about 20 percent of the streets. Streets that carry most of the traffic receive priority for maintenance.

Arterial streets are designed for through traffic. They are given preference for signs and traffic signals. The new plan proposes to create an arterial with I-15 access in the general area of 1700 North.

Collector streets move traffic from local residential streets to the arterial streets. Collectors serve residential areas with the capacity of carrying 1,500 to 3,000 cars daily.

The purpose of revising the street plan is to meet the need for an efficient street system.
