Doyle Norton of Viewmont High School has been named the Utah Biology Teacher of the Year and will be honored next month by the National Association of Biology Teachers.

Norton, who heads the science department at Viewmont, is considered by his peers as a leader in motivating students in advanced placement biology courses. His program boasts a 70 percent success rate in getting students past the College Board Advanced Placement examination.Norton's enthusiasm and ability prompt numerous students to go beyond the required natural sciences curriculum. Last year, 110 Viewmont students enrolled in advanced placement biology courses, a highlight of which is an annual biology/ecology field trip to Southern California.

Many of his students have excelled at state science fairs and at the International Science and Engineering Fair.
