Crews have been called off the search for a doctor missing since he told friends last week he was going on a hike in the rugged mountains east of Salt Lake City.

Nearly a week of searching by ground crews and Civil Air Patrol planes failed to turn up a trace of 28-year-old Jake Gradwohl, said Salt Lake County Sheriff Capt. Mike Wilkinson."As far as a major all-out search, we're calling it off, but we'll be doing periodic day searches," he said.

A sheriff's dispatcher said a two-person team will continue the investigation, checking out any leads that may be obtained.

On Saturday, three helicopters, eight dog teams and eight members of the Salt Lake County Sheriff's search-and-rescue team scoured areas of Broads Fork and the Mill B trails, about five miles from the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon.

"We've covered just about everything that we can cover," Wilkinson said.

Gradwohl, a resident physician at University Hospital, apparently went for a day hike near the trailheads on Oct. 14. Fellow workers reported him missing to authorities after he failed to show up for work for two days.
