Two people remained hospitalized Monday with injuries they received late Saturday in a head-on crash near the Old Mill on Big Cottonwood Canyon Road.

A third person who was hospitalized after the crash was expected to be released late Monday. Three others were also injured. The accident occurred along a curve in the road near 6600 South. Daniel W. Page, 19, of Sandy, was driving a 1986 Hyundai westbound when he collided with an eastbound 1978 Jeep pickup truck driven by John Douglas, 35, of Salt Lake County, just after 10 p.m. Saturday, according to a Salt Lake County sheriff's report.

Firefighters spent nearly an hour trying to free Page from the vehicle. The drivers were taken by helicopter to two Salt Lake hospitals. Page was in serious condition Monday in the intensive-care unit at LDS Hospital. Douglas was in satisfactory condition at University Hospital, according to hospital personnel. Both suffered head and chest injuries.

"That's a real bad corner. It's dark and people need to slow down in that area," Salt Lake County Fire Lt. Dennis Steadman said. He said the corner was the scene of a fatal accident three weeks ago.

Four other passengers in the two vehicles also suffered injuries. Kasey D. Mayhew, 18, Sandy, was treated for injuries at Cottonwood Hospital and released Sunday, a spokeswoman said. Michael R. Adams, 19, Holladay, was treated for injuries at Alta View Hospital and later released. Both were passengers in Page's vehicle.

Brenda Wood, 26, West Jordan, was treated for injuries at Cottonwood Hospital and was to be released late Monday. Another passenger in Douglas' vehicle, Terry Anderson, 38, of Salt Lake City, was treated for injuries by paramedics at the scene.

The accident is still under investigation.
