Frank Sinkwich, the Southeastern Conference's first Heisman Trophy winner, was remembered as one of the most talented athletes to come through the University of Georgia, where he made football history. Sinkwich died Monday at his Athens home after a long illness. He was 70.
He won the Heisman in 1942. "We've lost one of the great legends in football history," said Georgia athletic director Vince Dooley, who made a Sinkwich scrapbook as a young boy. "He was not only a great player but a wonderful person and citizen of Athens."Sinkwich, a halfback, led Georgia to an 11-1 record in 1942 and a 9-0 victory over UCLA in the Rose Bowl. That was also the year he set an SEC record for passing and total offense and led Georgia to its first SEC title.
