Oakland shortstop Walt Weiss, sidelined by injury in the American League Championship Series, was to undergo surgery to remove damaged cartilage in his left knee. Weiss suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament and cartilage damage in his knee while turning a double play in Game 2 of the ALCS against the Boston Red Sox. He was sidelined for the remainder of the playoffs and World Series.

Weiss is expected to make a full recovery during the offseason. The veteran shortstop had surgery on his right knee during the 1989 season.
