Our beloved mother, sister, grandmother and friend, Mary Barbara Weggeland Smith, 61, died on October 22, 1990 after waging a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on March 10, 1929 to Gordon LeRoy and Mary Murdoch Weggeland. On July 31, 1950, she married Wallace B. Smith in Salt Lake City, Utah; later divorced. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and belonged at the time of her death to the Murray Twenty-Third Ward.She graduated from the University of Utah where she was affiliated with the Chi Omega Sorority and numerous scholastic organizations. She received a Master's degree in Musicology from Brigham Young University and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Music Education from the University of Colorado. A noted music educator and pioneer of the group method of piano teaching, Dr. Smith was, for many years, an Associate Professor of Music at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She later was a Professor of Music at Ithaca College, Ithaca, New York. In 1981, she returned to Salt Lake City where she established and directed the Intermountain School of Keyboard Arts where she was a devoted teacher and successful businesswoman. Dr. Smith was the author of numerous articles on group teaching techniques and a popular lecturer. She served in many official capacities in the National Music Teachers Association, the Utah Music Teachers Association, the Virginia Music Teachers Association, and Mu Phil Epsilon.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Martha S. and Charles F. Stonebrook, Salt Lake City, Utah; Sandra S. and Thomas H. Bruguiere, Jr., Roseland, Virginia; three loving grandchildren, Kenneth W. Stonebrook, Russell T. and Sarah L. Bruguiere; brothers and sisters-in-law, G. Gail and Flora C. Weggeland; Warren M. and Merrie B. Weggeland, all of Salt Lake City; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents and beloved daughter, Mary Jane Smith.
Services will be held Friday, October 26th, 12 Noon, at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple. Friends and relatives may call at the Larkin Mortuary on Thursday, from 6 to 8 pm and on Friday, one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in her name to the Utah Chapter of the American Cancer Society, 610 East South Temple Street, Salt Lake City, Utah 84102.
