A brief look at the 16 first-round matchups this weekend in the 4A and 3A state prep football playoffs:

4A first-round gamesBonneville (7-3) at No. 5 Cyprus (7-2), 4 p.m. Saturday: Bonneville's three losses all came in Region 1 play. Cyprus won the Region 3 crown with a 6-1 league record, while seven of the Pirates' nine overall games - including both losses - were decided by a single-digit margin.

Provo (3-5) at No. 2 Alta (7-2), 2 p.m. Friday: Provo's three wins all came in away games. The Hawks averaged better than 30 points a game in their seven wins.

No. 3 Highland (7-2) at Timpview (6-2), 3 p.m. Friday: The Rams have not scored fewer than 21 points this season - even in its two losses to Olympus and Alta. Timpview started the regular season with a 3-game win streak and ended the regular season on a similar note.

Taylorsville (6-3) at No. 4 Davis (7-2), 4:30 p.m. Friday: The Warriors' defense has allowed only 79 points in nine games - including three shutouts in the last four games. Davis is coming off an 24-22 upset loss to Weber.

Bingham (4-5) at No. 1 Skyline (8-1), 3 p.m. Friday: The Miners have won three straight and boast one of the state's stingiest defenses by allowing an average of nine points a game. Of course, the Eagles' balanced wishbone attack has averaged 35 points per game.

Granger (6-3) at Roy (7-2), 3:30 p.m. Friday: The Lancers followed an early season four-game win streak by playing .500 ball over the final two weeks. Roy has bounced back and forth into the 4A rankings this season.

Olympus (6-4) at No. 5 Orem (6-2), 1 p.m. Saturday: This could be the weekend's best game, with the up-and-down-and-once-ranked Titans having beaten Alta and Highland and suffering a 13-6 heartbreaker to Skyline, only to be beaten handily by the likes of East, Weber and Brighton. The Region 4 champion Tigers have averaged nearly 30 points a game while dwelling in near obscurity.

Clearfield (6-3) at West Jordan (5-4), 2 p.m. Friday: The Falcons averaged 28 points a game when jumping out to a 4-1 start of the season but have averaged just eight a game by going 2-2 in its last four games. West Jordan lost 35-7 to Clearfield in the preason, so the Jaguars have revenge on their minds.

3A first-round games

Woods Cross (5-5) at No. 3 Bear River (8-1), 1 p.m. Saturday: The Wildcats needed a 35-20 preliminary playoff victory over Murray to qualify, which also ended a three-game WX losing streak. The Region 5 champion Bears have won eight straight.

Sky View (6-3) at No. 5 Dixie (7-1), 1 p.m. Friday: The Bobcats have silently placed third in Region 5, and have scored fewer than 20 points in only one game this year. The Dixie defense has given up double-digit scoring only three times while allowing an average of nine points a game.

Box Elder (5-3) at No. 4 Jordan (7-2), 2:30 p.m. Friday: The Bees have scored 30-plus points in three games, while managing fewer than 14 in three other games. The Beetdiggers averaged 28 points a game in seven wins.

Spanish Fork (3-5) at Lehi (5-3), 2 p.m. Friday: The Dons won two of their last three to qualify for the playoffs. Lehi started the year with three lopsided losses, only to go though five Region 7 games in undefeated fashion.

Logan (4-5) at No. 1 Bountiful (9-0), 5 p.m. Saturday: Logan suffered through a midseason four-game losing streak and needed a 25-6 preliminary-playoff win Wednesday over Ben Lomond to qualify. Bountiful's average winning score this season is 31-10.

Pine View (6-3) at Emery County (7-2), 3 p.m. Friday: The only time that the Panthers didn't score at least 20 points were their seven-point outings in losses to ranked Dixie and Springville. A surprise quarterfinalist last year, Emery has won five straight games going into the playoffs.

West (5-4) at Mountain Crest (5-3), 2 p.m. Friday: The Panthers have won four of their last five games. The Mustangs stumbled to an 0-2 start before going 5-1 in Region 5 competiton.

Uintah (4-5) at No. 2 Springville (8-0), 1 p.m. Friday: The Utes have allowed their opponents single-digit scoring in five games this year. Meanwhile, the Region 8 champion Red Devils have averaged 26.
