The caretaker government on Wednesday rejected charges by a French observer team that sophisticated fraud was used in last week's parliamentary elections.
"They based their observations on information fed to them," Justice Naeemuddin, head of the government's Election Commission, told a news conference. He said the members of the team from the Paris-based International League of Human Rights, which represents 54 nations, "have done a great injustice to the election commission."
The French team of two judges and two lawyers charged that a "highly sophisticated fraud mechanism" was partly responsible for the massive victory by the Islamic Democratic Alliance, an army-backed coalition opposed to ousted Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, in the Oct. 24 National Assembly elections.
