Salt Lake County jail officials freed a man Tuesday afternoon in his bathrobe in the middle of a winter storm.
Apparently, jail officials had arrested James Gannet at his home 10 days ago wearing the bathrobe just as he was getting out of the shower.Jail officials tried to stop the man from leaving the jail in the bathrobe but were unsuccessful. Gannet said he wanted to be free, and, despite freezing temperatures and snow-packed streets, left the jail barefoot.
The former inmate was befriended by a Salt Lake man who gave him some clothes.
Gannet was charged with aggravated assault and issued jail clothes when arrested.
"They couldn't believe they were letting me out like that, but there was nothing they could do about it because I don't think they had anything for me to wear," Gannet said.
