A manuscript of Mozart's "Fantasia and Sonata in C Minor" sold Wednesday at auction for $1.57 million, tying a record for a music manuscript, Sotheby's said.

The manuscript, which contained previously unknown embellishments by the composer, was part of a group of manuscripts offered by the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary of Philadelphia. The bid by Otto Haas, a London dealership, tied the record for such a manuscript set a year ago, when Sotheby's got the same price for a piano concerto by Robert Schumann.

Haas paid an additional buyer's premium of 10 percent.

The manuscripts were discovered in a safe at the school in July. They had been donated in 1950 by Marguerite Treat Doane, whose father had been a prominent collector.

Sotheby's said the manuscript apparently had been among a collection sold by Mozart's wife, Constanze, in 1799, eight years after the composer's death.
