Two unidentified men were killed Wednesday night and Thursday morning in separate traffic accidents in Salt Lake City.

One was killed as he was attempting to cross the freeway and another died when his vehicle crashed into a tree. Neither had identification on them and investigators are continuing efforts to identify them.Moments after skidding across a snow-slicked street in South Salt Lake and smashing into a car waiting at a traffic signal late Wednesday night, an unidentified man crashed into a tree a few blocks from the first collision.

He was taken to LDS Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The man allegedly ran into another car about 11:30 p.m. at 3300 and State Street. That accident was minor, said South Salt Lake Police Officer Tracy Tingey.

Tingey said the hit-and-run victim chased the suspect but lost him at about 2900 S. 500 East. When Salt Lake police received a report that someone had rammed a sedan head-on into a large tree a block and a half north of the first wreck, "we put two and two together," Tingey said.

The victim in the first crash identified the dead man's car as the one that hit him in South Salt Lake, police said.

The second man was killed about 4:30 a.m. Thursday while he was attempting to cross I-15 on foot.

Utah Highway Patrol investigators said the victim was trying to cross the southbound lanes near the North Temple overpass when he was struck by a car traveling south on the freeway. No further details were available.
