Cathy Johnston birdied three consecutive holes to take a one-stroke lead with a 5-under-par 67 in the opening round of the Spalding Invitational Pro-Am, the only tournament in which both men and women compete.

Johnston played on the Poppy Hills course, the most demanding of the three courses in the $300,000 tournament. Rick Rhoads, a club pro at the San Francisco Golf Club, was scond after a round of 68 at Pebble Beach.
