Anne Ewers, the former director of Boston Lyric Opera, has been appointed general director of the Utah Opera Company, effective May 1, 1991. She was selected from a field of 55 applicants to replace Utah Opera founder Glade Peterson, who died last spring.
Ewers, 38, is a prominent stage director of opera with leading companies in the United States and Canada. She holds a master of music degree from the University of Texas at Austin and bachelor of arts degrees in music and theater from Fontbonne College in St. Louis. She began her professional career at the San Francisco Opera as an assistant stage director. She has since staged for the Canadian Opera, New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Wolftrap Opera and dozens of others nationwide, as well as her own Boston Lyric.
"Salt Lake City is bursting with potential," said Ewers. "Combined with the current status and potential development of Utah Opera, I find the situation extremely appealing. The opportunity to expand on what Glade built here is an invigorating challenge."
