Even as authorities struggle to cope with soaring murder rates in many American localities, the National Rifle Association is trying to overturn the 1986 federal law banning private possession of fully automatic firearms.

This prompted Don Cahill, legislative chairman of the national Fraternal Order of Police to comment: "First cop-killer bullets, now machine guns. Whose side is the NRA on?"Good question.
