Beginning Jan. 1, 1991, Midvale residents will be required to install a smoke detector. The new ruling will also apply to apartment dwellers but not businesses.

The Midvale City Council is one of the first to pass such an ordinance."The reason we have done this is not to burden the property owners, but as a life-safety measure for the citizens," said Battalion Chief John Evans, Midvale Fire Department.

Evans said the department will spot-check apartment complexes and homes. Persons not in compliance will receive a warning. A citation could eventually be issued.
