Kenneth John Hansen, 78, was released from his valiant fight with leukemia on December 26, 1990.
Born December 27, 1911, to Anena (Nina) Kirstine Andersen and Louis Hansen in Elsinore, Utah. Married Helen Catherine Plowgian, May 9, 1947 in Salt Lake City; later solemnized in the SL LDS Temple. After attending South Sevier and West High Schools, received a Masters Degree in accounting from Benjamin Franklin University in Washington D.C., now part of George Washington University. During World War II served in the Army Corps of Engineers in San Francisco, where he met his wife. Continued with Army Reserves and retired as a Major in 1972. Employed by the State of Utah for 35 1/2 years as state disbursing officer, chief accountant and assistant director of the Department of Finance. Responsible for creating the first state motor pool in 1949 and starting the payroll deduction program. Between 1949 and 1972, his signature authorized state disbursements totaling almost seven billion dollars. He survived the hazard of not being a merit employee (subject to removal by incoming administrations), having served four different governors. Received the 1969 State Employee of the Year Award. Active in the LDS Church and a member of the Parley's First Ward. Served as ward financial clerk, secretary to YMIA and the High Priest's Group. An outdoorsman, he hunted, fished and enjoyed the companionship at his brother's farm. He felt at home when working the soil. His respect for nature is evidenced in his own beautiful creations. He had a great love for his many friends and neighbors. The family expresses gratitude for the selfless care provided by the many conscientious doctors, nurses, and staff of the Veterans Administration Medical Center.He is survived by his devoted wife and companion, Helen; daughter, Carolyn Hansen Ainsworth and husband Brent; son, Kenneth A. Hansen and wife, Leson A. Dunkley; five beautiful grandchildren, Bevan, Aubrey, Braden and Kelsie Ainsworth, and Alys Hansen; loving brothers and sisters, Mrs. Dan (Mildred) Anderson, Salt Lake City, Utah; N. Lonzo, Alexandria, VA; Merrill C., San Diego, California; W. Grant, Bridgeland, Utah; Mrs. J. Grant (Ruth) Nielson, Springville, Utah. Preceded in death by brothers: Robert H., Waldo J., L. Lee, W. Kay, and L. Ray.
Funeral services will be held Monday, 12:00 noon, December 31, 1990 in the Parley's 1st Ward, 2350 S. 2100 E. Friends may call at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive, Sunday 6-8 p.m. and Monday at the ward from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Interment Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Hematology/Oncology Section, Veterans Administration Medical Center, 500 Foothill Blvd., Salt Lake City, UT 84148.
