Nearly one-eighth of Utah's 650,000 live in poverty. One-sixth have no health insurance. And in 1989, there were 12,548 reports of child abuse.

To help concerned citizens learn how to make a difference for the state's children, Utah Children is offering a brief workshop entitled "If You Want to Make a Difference and Are Not Sure How." The free, public workshop will be held Tuesday, Jan. 8, from 7:30-9 a.m. at Primary Children's Medical Center, 100 N. Medical Drive. Continental breakfast will be served.Nancy Amidei, an advocate for women and children in poverty, will discuss the basic principles and techniques for winning better social policies in Utah. Amidei, based in Washington, D.C., is a long-time writer on health and social policy. She has been a commentator on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered." She is occupying the Belle Spafford Chair at the University of Utah's Graduate School of Social Work.
