The Garfield County Sheriff's Office said it is pursing leads in last week's killing of 13 cattle and the apparently related arson fires that destroyed two line shacks in the Glen Canyon National Rec-reation Area.

Sheriff Robert Judd said his investigators have joined forces with two Bureau of Land Management rangers to look into the crimes. He declined to speculate as to the motive of the arsons and killings.

The eight cows and five calves were all shot at close range and were found in the area where the cabins were burned.

Judd said he anticipates finding more dead cattle in the rugged area, as searchers were able to cover only a small portion of the 75,000-acre Escalante River drainage where the cattle were grazing.

A news release by the BLM said the two cabins were authorized by the bureau before the Glen Canyon Dam was built.

The cattle belonged to Ivan and Arthur Lyman of Boulder, Garfield County, who have a BLM permit allowing them to graze 360 cattle in the drainage between Sept. 1 and March 31.

The dead cattle were found by hikers March 16. Judd said a veterinarian determined the cattle were killed about three days earlier.
