PacifiCorp, parent company of Utah Power & Light Co., and its 87 percent owned subsidiary, Pacific Telecom Inc., said separate letters of intent have been signed to acquire Postville Telephone Co. and Thorp Telephone Co.

Subject to regulatory approvals, the mergers are expected to close in the second half of this year, after which it is expected that Postville and Thorp will become subsidiaries of Pacific Telecom.Postville, located in Iowa, provides telephone service to 1,400 subscribers and owns a cable television business serving 500 subscribers.

Thorp, located in Wisconsin, provides telephone service to 1,950 subscribers, owns a cable television business serving 480 subscribers and has ownership interests in two Wisconsin cellular Rural Service Area partnerships.

"The Postville and Thorp acquisitions are an affirmation of our desire to increase our presence in the Midwest," said Pacific Telecom Chairman C.E. Robinson.

"These acquisitions, as well as our pending acquisitions of North-West Telecommunications and Turtle Lake Telephone Co. will increase our subscriber base in the Midwest to over 90,000 when all of the transactions are completed.
