Genevieve Atwood, a former three-term state legislator and former director of the Utah Geological and Mineral Survey, officially began her quest Tuesday to become the second Utah woman to serve in the U.S. Congress.
Atwood, a Republican, filed her candidacy papers for the 2nd Congressional District. She is running against former GOP Rep. Dan Marriott and incumbent Democratic Rep. Wayne Owens.Atwood said she has "relatively similar" political views to Marriott, who held the 2nd District seat from 1977-84. He stepped down in 1984 in an unsuccessful bid for the GOP gubernatorial nomination.
The primary difference said Atwood is, "I'm a more electable person running against Wayne Owens."
Utah has sent only one woman to Congress, Reva Beck Bosone, a Democrat who served in the 2nd District for two terms, from 1949-53.
