The majority of 5,110 additional non-agricultural jobs created in Utah County last year when compared with 1988 came from the service and trade sectors, a Utah Department of Employee Security report says.
The report, which highlights job growth and construction trends for 1989, says the county's 91,150 non-farm jobs represent a 5.9 percent increase over a year earlier.New service-sector jobs totaled 2,430, with more than 800 jobs created in computer and educational services and 200 in health services.
Trade jobs rose by 2,250, with wholesale professional-equipment jobs growing by 200. Some 800 jobs were created in retail trade-variety stores, miscellaneous retail stores and eating establishments.
The valuation of permit-authorized new construction - $30.4 million - during 1989's fourth quarter fell 3.2 percent from a year earlier, but the number of home construction permits - 202 - rose 14.8 percent.
Most new Utah County homes constructed last year were built in Alpine, 11; American Fork, 20; Orem, 67 homes and four duplexes; Pleasant Grove, 12; and Provo, 27 homes, eight duplexes and two apartment buildings.
"For all of 1989," the report says, "Utah County accounted for 15 percent of all new homes and 24 percent of all duplexes built in the state."
