Salt Lake County sheriff's detectives have received a tip in the death of a teenage girl who was sexually assaulted and strangled almost a year ago.
A man who saw some suspicious activity the night of Felicia Pappas' death has finally come forward, although detective Manfred Lassig said the information is not likely to solve the case immediately.Pappas, 17, left the Cushion 'N' Cue, 2865 S. State, shortly before midnight on April 5, 1989. She was alone and supposedly was going to walk to her home, in the area of 4600 South and 100 East.
Her body was found the next morning outside an office building at 4511 S. 600 East. She had been raped and strangled on a small lawn east of the building.
Detectives received few leads until earlier this month when a man reported seeing an altercation at that site shortly after midnight, said Lassig.
The witness described seeing a black man arguing with a white woman. The black man was described as about 30 years old, about 6 feet tall and slender.
The witness also reported seeing the people on the lawn exchange words with two people in a car, a small brown or copper-colored hatchback.
Anyone with additional information is asked to call the sheriff's detective division, 535-7491.
