40,000 OF 4 MILLION INFANTS BORN ANNUALLY DIE IN 1ST YEAR

Of the more than 4 million babies born in the United States each year, some 40,000 die in the first year, according to the National Commission to Prevent Infant Mortality.

Ten percent of the births, an estimated 400,000, are premature, says the National Center for Health Statistics.
