Fire swept through an oil and chemical company Tuesday, sending a huge plume of smoke toward downtown Milwaukee that closed businesses, schools and a busy freeway. No injuries were reported.

Glendale Fire Chief Norman Wichman said the fire at Harrison Oil Inc. began near some cardboard boxes in a stock area shortly after 4 a.m. and spread rapidly to a part of the building where tanks of oil, kerosene and pesticides were stored.Firefighters were unable to control the flames, which spread from the plant to an area of brush and railroad tracks. Toxic fumes were not a major concern, but police evacuated a large neighborhood south of the fire where the black smoke was spreading.
