Pamela W. Fogle was named director of public relations at the University of Utah Monday. The U. Institutional Council approved the recommendation made by a search committee, which had screened 97 candidates and interviewed a half-dozen finalists.

Fogle succeeds Raymond A. Haeckel, who has been assigned responsibilities for government relations and coordination of both community and public relations. She has been acting director of the Public Relations Department for the past six months.Ted R. Capener, vice president for university relations, said Fogle has "a solid professional reputation on campus and is sensitive to the challenges facing the university." She is planning new strategies to strengthen the image and visibility of the institution, he said.

She was director of news and information services for the past three years and joined the U. in 1979 as science writer and national news coordinator. She previously was a public relations director of a private midwestern college and held promotion/public relations jobs for commercial radio and television.

Fogle has been invited to speak at regional and national forums on the role of university news services and has received several medals for programs and film production.

She received degrees from Mercer University, Macon, Ga., and the University of Florida, Gainsville.
