About 200 college students marched through this northern New Jersey community Friday, hoping to diffuse tensions that flared following the fatal shooting of a black teenager by a white policeman.

"We sympathize with the death of Phillip Pannell," said Walter Fields, an official with the Bergen County chapter of the NAACP. "We don't condone the violence, but we do thoroughly understand the anger."Pannell, 15, of nearby River Edge was shot and killed Tuesday night by Teaneck police officer Gary Spath, who was responding to an anonymous telephone tip that a teenager had drawn a gun on another youth.

Spath has since been suspended with pay, and his partner, Wayne Blanco, has been temporarily relieved of his duties, acting Bergen County Prosecutor John Holl said.
