Cost of living in the Provo-Orem area remains one of the lowest in the nation, according to the American Chamber of Commerce Researchers Association.

Of 284 urban areas surveyed for cost of living during last year's fourth quarter, Provo/Orem ranked sixth, scoring 88.7 on the association's cost-of-living index. In other words, Provo-Orem's cost of living is 11.3 percent below the national average.Cost of living in the Provo/Orem area is the lowest in the state, followed by Cedar City at 89.1 and St. George at 92.5. Salt Lake City scored 95.5, compared with Los Angeles at 129.2, Phoenix at 101.3 and Denver at 102.1. The most expensive area in the United States was Long Island, N.Y., at 162, and the lowest was Poplar Bluff, Mo., at 86.2.

The lowest-ranking component in Provo/Orem's ranking was housing at 73.1, with transportation, at 97.6, being the highest component. Groceries were 88.3, utilities scored 90.4, health care was 85.1, and miscellaneous goods and services scored 96.6.
