All six of Brigham Young's top-seeded players, including defending champion Mary Beth Young, scored straight set victories Friday at the women's High Country Athletic Conference tennis championships.
Young defeated Jenny Cook of New Mexico, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to Saturday morning's semifinals. Young will meet Utah's Julie Kempin, a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Lissette Balbiers of New Mexico State.BYU players were seeded first in six of the seven singles flights. Utah's Liz Fox, the only non-BYU player seeded first, defeated Chrissie Edwards of New Mexico State, 6-1, 6-2.
Other BYU victories in singles included Anna Fuderburk's 6-0, 6-1 win over Stephanie Richleimer of Utah State; Monika Kobilikuia, who beat Charlyn Hodson of Utah State, 6-1, 6-2; Maddy Diekmann, a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Tracy Myers of Utah State; Kim Chang, who beat Cathy Ross of New Mexico State, 6-2, 6-1, and Shelly Hannah, who defeated Kim Butler of New Mexico, 6-4, 6-1.
Besides Kempin and Fox, Utah also got quarterfinal round wins from Susie Costa, Kristin Siegmond, Ruth Ann Stevens and Stephanie Ball.
