A petition drive is being planned to gather signatures in support of on-campus child care at Utah State University.

The campaign, sponsored by the USU Women's Center, the College of Family Life and other campus groups, seeks establishment of a day-care facility for infants, toddlers and preschoolers. The program would be used by students, faculty and other employees at the school, said petition supporter Janet Osborne.

Bonita Wyse, dean of the College of Family Life, said day care has become an "absolute necessity" because of changes in the family structure and the opportunities for women today.

Wyse said an on-campus child-care center would not compete with existing services in the area.
