Utah County joined this week with the state and nation in proclaiming April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.
More than 2 million children are abused and neglected annually nationwide with 1,958 reports of child abuse or neglect in Utah County in 1989, said Laura Blanchard, representing the Utah County Child Abuse Council.Utah County "has an immediate concern in protecting its most precious resources - the children of our community," she read in the proclamation Monday before county commissioners.
The Utah County Child Abuse Council has combined public and private organizations and interested citizens to work for the prevention of child abuse, she said.
County commissioners are asking residents in the proclamation to become involved in the local and national efforts to protect children.
Commissioner Brent Morris said the Utah County number of abuse victims doesn't "properly reflect the severity of child abuse in our community. There are probably several times that because many reports don't reach some public agency or law enforcement agency."
