Located 21 miles west of Hartford, Conn., Torrington was settled early in the 18th century and incorporated as a borough in 1887.

Torrington was the birthplace in 1800 of abolitionist John Brown, who led the action at Harpers Ferry in 1859 that preceded the Civil War.The world's first condensed milk plant was established here in 1851.
