Pauline Frederick, a veteran broadcaster who began by interviewing the wives of diplomats and rose to a distinguished career in network journalism that paved the way for other women, died Wednesday of a heart attack in Chicago at age 84. Frederick worked for five years as an ABC correspondent before moving in 1953 to NBC, where she served as United Nations correspondent for 21 years. She covered the Cuban missile crisis.
