Kanab and San Juan each earned a trip to the 2A UHSAA-First Security Bank state baseball championship game with semifinal victories Monday at BYU.

Kanab downed Richfield 6-3 in the first of the two afternoon semfinal contests, with San Juan edging Hurricane 9-8 in the follow-up affiar.Although being outhit 7-5 by the Wildcats, the Cowboys benefited from five Richfield errors and a five-run fifth inning in the triumph. Winning pitcher James Reidhead aided his own cause by hitting a two-run single in the fifth.

Kanab improved to a 20-3 record with the win; Richfield ended its season with a 15-4 mark.

San Juan used multi-run innings in the middle of its game for its victory, with the Broncos scoring two in the third, fourth and fifth innings and another three runs in the sixth. In the latter, Bryan Bowring hit a two-run triple for the Broncos.

Hurricane, which outhit San Juan 11-9, scored three in the bottom of the third for a 3-2 edge - it's only lead of the game.

The Tigers threatened in their last at-bats, with the tying run on third with two outs. However, San Juan pitcher Brent Bowers, who went the seven-inning distance for the victory, worked out of his worries with a game-ending strikeout.

Thursday's Kanab-San Juan finale at the BYU baseball stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
