Best-selling writer Tom Clancy, author of "The Hunt for Red October" and other techno-thrillers, has decided not to run for a Maryland congressional seat now held by Democrat Roy Dyson.And Ron Kovic, author and subject of "Born on the Fourth of July," opted out of a race for the Orange County, Calif., seat of Republican Bob Dornan. Kovic had been considering a run since December. Meanwhile, actor Ralph ("The Waltons") Waite, 61, has decided to run as a Democrat against four-term Republican Rep. Al McCandless in a Palm Springs, Calif.-area district.
