Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed pitcher John Smiley on Saturday broke his throwing hand when he slammed it in a car door on the way to Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

The Pirates placed Smiley on the 21-day disabled list and said he will miss a minimum of four weeks play.Right-hander Stan Belinda was recalled from the Pirates Class AAA Buffalo team to replace Smiley in the pitching rotation. Belinda is 3-1 with five saves this season with the farm team.

Smiley is 3-3 this season with a 3.37 ERA. He has pitched 452/3 innings.
