A retired Utah state trooper convinced his abductor to surrender his gun Sunday night during a wild ride toward Missoula that ended at a police roadblock, authorities said.

Jerry Pierson, 56, of Smithfield, Utah, said he was at a hunting camp near Nine Mile when a man approached him and asked for a ride to Missoula."He walked around the front of the tent," said Pierson. "This guy says he wants a ride to town. I said I wouldn't give him a ride. He said, `Yes, you will, or I'll blow your so-and-so brains out.' "

Pierson said the man then pulled out a revolver.

Pierson said he and the man got into his vehicle and headed toward Missoula, leaving a friend of Pierson at the camp.

At Nine Mile, Pierson said, he was sent by the man into a store to buy beer while the abductor waited in the vehicle.

Pierson said he told a store clerk to call authorities, then returned to the vehicle with the beer and headed toward Missoula.

On the way to Missoula, Pierson said, "I talked him out of his gun."

Pierson said he stopped about 9:30 p.m. at a roadblock that had been set up on I-90 near the Orange Street exit in Missoula, and patrol cars were following him at the time.

The name of the suspect taken into custody at the roadblock wasn't released by authorities.

Despite the incident, Pierson said he planned to return to the hunting camp to go bear hunting.
