Salt Lake police are continuing to investigate the murder of a male prostitute whose body was found lying in a street Friday morning.

The body of Cornell Burns, 23, was discovered lying face down behind a car early Friday about 220 E. Kelsey Ave. (1185 South). Police initially thought he was the victim of a hit-and-run automobile accident but later discovered he had died from a gunshot wound.Investigators said the man previously had been convicted of prostitution.

Officers spoke with the victim about midnight when they were called to a domestic dispute at Burns' home and believe the shooting occurred between midnight and 6 a.m. Lt. Norm Thompson said the murder may have taken place inside a vehicle.

"Our speculation is that he was in a vehicle and he was pushed out of the vehicle," he said. The body apparently was run over after it was dumped.

Anyone with information is asked to call homicide detectives at the Salt Lake Police Department.
