Former Wendover police chief A. June Carter, charged with possessing cocaine, now faces new charges of witness-tampering and illegal wiretapping.

Carter, 35, appeared in court Monday to answer to one count of witness-tampering and three counts of wiretapping in connection with his March arrest and the February arrest of his wife, former Wendover police officer Janese Carter.Third District Judge Edward Watson scheduled a preliminary hearing for June Carter on June 11 at 1 p.m. His brother, Larry Carter, has been charged with one count of witness-tampering and was ordered to appear for a separate preliminary hearing on May 31.

Janese Carter, 29, was arrested Feb. 27 in the parking lot of Crossroads Mall after an informant was given six ounces of cocaine and four ounces of methamphetamines in exchange for $16,000, court documents said. A partially concealed, fully loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun was located on the seat of the vehicle where she was seated.
