Salt Lake County's American Party has elected a 17-year-old boy as its treasurer.

Michael Richardson, of West Jordan, was elected after assuring party regulars he will be 18, and able to vote, in time for the fall elections.Twenty-nine participants and one infant attended the convention Saturday. There were no contested races.

The American Party provides an alternative to Republicans and Democrats who are "two arms of the same type of philosophy," State Chairman David Wilson said.

He said the mainline parties offer only "bigger government, more taxes and less responsibility as citizens.

"A few years ago the people of Utah elected a Republican majority in the House, Senate and a Republican governor," Wilson said. "What happened is we got the biggest state tax increase in the history of Utah."

The American Party has about 30 candidates statewide this year, the most they've had in a long time, Wilson said.
