Paul J. "Hans" Hansen, 76, former head of the University of Utah department of education, died May 22, 1990.
Mr. Hansen graduated from the U. in 1936, received his master's degree in 1939 and doctorate in 1950. He was a member of several fraternities and organizations, including the National Education Association, Utah Education Association and National Science Teaching Association.He was also a Master M-Man. He was well known for disciplining young men in a church basketball program he directed.
His method of teaching the young men, whom he referred to as "gym rats" in a 1965 Deseret News article, was by allowing the 500 boys to operate gym facilities, handle financing and cleaning.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 25, at 1 p.m. in the Edgehill 1st Ward chapel, 1750 S. 1500 East. Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the church one hour before services. Burial will be in Salt Lake City Cemetery.
