Shelly Gravis won't have to spend time after all in the Weber County Jail for feeding a hungry stray dog.
The 38-year-old Hooper woman was given a ticket for harboring a stray dog on May 10 by Weber County Sheriff Deputy Phil Farr."We decided to adopt her (the dog)," Gravis said Monday. "We got a license for her so now I don't have to go to trial."
Gravis said she was trying to shoo the dog out of the street near her Hooper home when Deputy Farr came along and asked her if she owned the dog. When she replied no, she said that the deputy asked her if she was feeding the animal. When she replied yes, he gave her a ticket.
"I was really upset because up here we have problems with dogs," she said. "I was trying to help her. She's a good dog."
Gravis said that the deputy wanted to take the dog to the pound, but she wouldn't let him because she knew the dog would be put to sleep. She said that's when she got the ticket.
Her trial had been set for July 5 on the class B misdemeanor charge, but she said she won't have to go to trial now that she licensed the animal.
The female dog is now a part of the family, and Gravis said her daughter decided to name the dog Punky.
