Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Randall Cunningham said Wednesday he'd welcome Jim McMahon to the team, a newspaper reported.

"I think it's great. I think the more competition you bring in, the better," Cunningham told The Philadelphia Inquirer.McMahon would seriously consider signing with the Philadelphia Eagles as a backup to Randall Cunningham if the veteran quarterback can't find a starting job elsewhere, his agent said Tuesday.

Eagles coach Buddy Ryan, who was the Chicago Bears' defensive coach when McMahon led them to the 1986 Super Bowl title, disclosed Monday night that the Eagles had contacted McMahon.

McMahon was released by the San Diego Chargers last winter.

"If something happens where there's a real big controversy and Jim ends up starting, I know the system in Chicago, so I can go there," Cunningham joked. "All joking aside, no kidding, I like Jim McMahon, and I'd like to see him come here."
