Thousands of Filipino workers, saying they would go hungry without U.S. military bases, marched to the Philippine Senate Thursday to demand a continued American presence in the country.

About 50 bar girls joined some 5,000 workers from Subic Naval Base and Clark Air base in the first major pro-bases rally in the capital after weeks of protests by leftist groups opposing the base.One group carried a streamer urging communist guerrillas to "stop (the) unjust killings of Americans." The rebels have killed 10 Americans during the past two years in a bloody campaign to demand the removal of the bases.
