Arab foreign ministers meeting to prepare for next week's summit in Baghdad accused the United States Wednesday of supporting Israel in threats against the Arab nation, delegates said.
The upsurge of violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza strip this week - one of the bloodiest in the 29 months of the Palestinian uprising - helped tip the balance in favor of strongly-worded statements, they added. An Iraqi-led group spurned U.S. advice to abandon anti-American rhetoric, make further concessions to Israel, and accept Soviet emigration to Israel, delegates said.
The PLO had lobbied for the summit to try to counter the influx of Soviet Jews into Israel and consider the lack of progress toward peace.
